Man sentenced to death for murdering female student in Chiba

CHIBA (Kyodo) -- A 50-year-old man was sentenced to death Thursday for murder and arson in the killing of a female university student in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, in 2009, in a lay judge trial at the Chiba District Court.
Tatsumi Tateyama stabbed Yukari Ogino, a 21-year-old senior at Chiba University, to death after breaking into her apartment, and stole cash and other items between Oct. 20 and 21, 2009, according to the ruling. He went back to the scene the day after and set fire to her apartment.
Tateyama was indicted on 11 charges including rape and robbery on Ogino and eight other women. Presiding Judge Masanori Hatoko said, "It was a very cruel crime and there is little possibility that the defendant will go straight."
It was the eighth capital punishment sentence given by a lay judge panel consisting of three professional and six citizen judges.
